On November 1, 2004, the Football Federation Australia formally announced the creation of the Hyundai A-League, which was to be Australia’s premier domestic football competition. Less than a year later, with eight teams representing seven cities in Australia and one in New Zealand, the league commenced play in Newcastle, New South Wales.
In the opening season, the league experienced a serious influx of foreign and Australian talent as a large number of former and current Socceroos jumped at the opportunity to return home. Crowds exceeded expectations with over one million fans going through the turnstiles at an average of 11,627 per game. Such was the success of the inaugural season, broadcast partner Fox Sports was quick to negotiate a new seven-year television agreement, which has helped provide financial stability for the competition and the clubs.
The current Hyundai A-League 2007/2008 season marks the league’s third and consists of 21 home and away rounds, with each club playing the other three times. The team that finishes on top of the league table is awarded the Premiership, with the winner of the subsequent four-team finals series awarded the Championship.
