Headquartered in New York City, Major League Soccer is the top-flight professional soccer league in the United States. Since the inaugural season in 1996, the league has experienced a period of unprecedented growth marked by expansion, the construction of soccer-specific stadiums, national television agreements, and additional investors. Now in its 12th season, MLS has cemented its place in the landscape of professional sports.
On the pitch, the league’s player pool features an increasingly talented array of American stars in addition to the more than 120 international players representing more than 50 different countries. Some of the world’s most renowned soccer stars compete in MLS, including English icon David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Mexican legend Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), and the Argentine sensation Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Colombus Crew). Most recently in 2007, MLS clubs have held their own in international play with both the D.C. United and the Houston Dynamo reaching the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Los Angeles Galaxy competing in the SuperLiga final.
The MLS regular season runs from April to the end of October with the MLS Cup Playoffs beginning thereafter. This year, the Houston Dynamo were crowned league champions after a dramatic come from behind victory 2-1 over the New England Revolution at RFK Stadium, home of D.C. United in Washington D.C.
